Key to the City

This artifact is the Key to the City of Fort William, Ontario. It was given to prominent visiting dignitaries on important occasions within the city. A Key to the City is said to represent the recipients freedom to enter and leave the city on their own free will, based on the city’s trust of the individual. While the keys did not open any important gates or buildings, they were prominent gifts for important individuals that symbolized their significance in the region.
